  4. ABOUT TextChanger
  5. ----- -----------

  7. [Note - although TextChanger works with System 6, we recommend that you
  8. use it with System 7.0 or later; these instructions presume that you are
  9. using System 7.0 or later. Under System 6, the “Show” button is
  10. disabled, and the “drag and drop” capability is not available.]
  11.  
  12. TextChanger is an application which will scan your a disk or folder for
  13. text files, and allow you to selectively change their creators or delete
  14. the contents of their resource forks. This idea is not new; for years,
  15. there has been an application called “TEXT Ranger”, written by Darin
  16. Adler of Apple Computer, which does the same thing. However, TextChanger
  17. adds some unique capabilities:

  19.     -    TextChanger will identify the application which created the
  20.         document, if that application is present on any mounted disk.
  21.  
  22.     -    Whenever a new type of text file is encountered, you can
  23.         instruct TextChanger to show you the file; TextChanger will then
  24.         open the window in the Finder which contains the file, and
  25.         select the file. (This is so that you can establish the context
  26.         in which the file exists, or even open it up to view its
  27.         contents. Having this context often helps in deciding what to do
  28.         with the file.)

  30.     -    TextChanger can operate in the background.
  31.  
  32.     -    TextChanger can change the Finder label of text files, and can
  33.         optionally preserve the file's modification date and Projector
  34.         ("ckid") information when zapping the file's resource fork.
  35.         
  36. To scan a disk or folder, drop it on TextChanger. You can scan more than
  37. one disk or folder at a time. (You can also launch TextChanger by
  38. double-clicking on it; if you do, the “Scan Folder...” command on the
  39. File menu will ask you to choose a directory to scan.)
  40.  
  41. TextChanger will then start scanning the drive (or folder). As it does
  42. so, it will display the name of the folder being scanned, and the name
  43. of the file currently being examined. (This last will change rather
  44. quickly.) To cancel a scan in progress, click the “Cancel” button in the
  45. progress dialog.
  46.  
  47. Whenever TextChanger encounters a file of a type it hasn’t seen, it will
  48. put up another dialog asking you what to do. There are a number of
  49. actions you can take:
  50.  
  51.     -    Enter an application signature code in the text field, and turn
  52.         on the “Change Creator to” checkbox. If you don’t know the
  53.         signature code for your desired application, you can click the
  54.         “Choose” button; if you then select an application program and
  55.         click “Open”, that application’s signature will be entered in
  56.         the text field for you.
  57.  
  58.     -    Turn on the “Change Label To” check box, and select a Finder
  59.         label from the associated pop-up menu.
  60.  
  61.     -    Turn on the “Zap Resource Fork” option to delete any resource
  62.         information that may exist in the file. (Text editors often
  63.         store information in the resource fork such as the font and size
  64.         used to display this file’s contents, the last window position
  65.         and size of the file, and so on. MPW also stores information
  66.         related to its Projector source-control system in the resource
  67.         fork of the file.)

  69.         If you zap the resource fork, you may optionally choose to
  70.         preserve the modification date of the file, and/or its Projector
  71.         state, if any.
  72.         
  73.     -    Don’t turn on any options, and click “OK”. When you do this,
  74.         files of the same type as the indicated file will not be
  75.         affected at all.
  76.  
  77.     -    Click the “Show” button. The indicated file will be displayed
  78.         in the Finder. With this information, you can determine what, if
  79.         anything, you should do. To resume the scan, bring TextChanger
  80.         to the front again. [Not available under System 6.]
  81.  
  82.     -    Click the “Cancel” button to cancel the scan.

  84. After selecting the appropriate options, click “OK” to continue the scan.
  85. When TextChanger is finished, it will quit. (If you launched TextChanger
  86. by double-clicking on its icon, it won’t quit; use the “Quit” command
  87. from the File menu.)

  92. If you find that you’re unable to drop a disk or folder onto TextChanger
  93. (or an alias to it), you probably need to rebuild your desktop, or use
  94. “Save a BNDL” or a similar utility to update the desktop database.

  100. resource forks isn’t new; the “TEXT Ranger” program by Darin Adler goes
  101. back to 1989 (and probably before).
